Cartier Ballon Bleu Leather Strap & Bracelet Guide:Do They Use Different Removal Mechanisms?

A few days ago, a customer reached out to us and mentioned that his Cartier leather strap for the Ballon Bleu had worn out and become damaged after long-term use. He hoped we could make a custom alligator leather strap for his Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.
During our conversation, he asked a question: Does the Cartier Ballon Bleu leather strap and bracelet use different removal mechanisms?

That reminded me I had seen the exact same question asked in watch forums online before. So I decided to write an article about the strap and bracelet removal systems on the Cartier Ballon Bleu.

Everything You Need to Know About Old vs New Systems

The Iconic Ballon Bleu

The Cartier Ballon Bleu is one of the most recognizable watch collections from Cartier, first introduced in 2007.
Its signature design elements include:

  • A perfectly rounded “balloon-shaped” case
  • A blue sapphire crown integrated into a protective crown guard
Distorted Roman numerals around the crown

The result is a watch that feels both elegant and slightly unconventional — a rare balance that explains its long-lasting popularity.Whether for formal wear or daily use, Ballon Bleu has become a go-to choice for both men and women.

When Did Cartier Introduce Quick-Release Systems?

Back in 2018, alongside the launch of the renewed Santos collection, Cartier introduced two key innovative technologies:

QuickSwitch — tool-free swapping of straps and bracelets, and SmartLink — effortless bracelet length adjustment.

For the first time, wearers were able to perform Cartier Ballon Bleu strap replacement without tools and adjust bracelet sizing on their own. This marked a major milestone for Cartier in creating more user-friendly luxury watch designs.

So when did the Cartier Ballon Bleu quick release system arrive?

Older models do not come with quick-release functionality at all.

It was around 2021 that Cartier began equipping selected Cartier Ballon Bleu models with a similar quick-release structure, supporting both Cartier Ballon Bleu bracelet removal and strap changes with ease.

Important note:

Not all Cartier Ballon Bleu watches are equipped with this feature.

Many smaller case sizes, especially ladies’ models, still use traditional spring bars.

How to Remove & Install a Quick-Release Bracelet ?

  • Press the small button (or pin) on the inner side of the bracelet
  • Push it inward firmly
  • Gently slide the bracelet away from the lugs, you’ll hear a “click” — it’s released
    Installing:
  • Align the metal pin with the lug holes
  • Make sure it is straight (don’t force it at an angle)
  • Push it into place
  • Listen for a “snap” — it’s locked
  • A slight wiggle helps align the pin perfectly.

Pro Tips: Many older Ballon Bleu watches can be upgraded with newer quick-release bracelets.
